Pitch Level Variation in French : Categorical or Gradient ?
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper reports the results of an experiment on the question of whether the realizations of f0 variations at the end of the final IP are categorical or gradient. We conducted an imitation task with resynthesized stimuli where the final pitch height was varied in steps of one semi-tone. Results are ambivalent, since both strategies are possible. However, we argue that there is enough evidence for establishing the existence of at least three pitch categories in French.

Pitch Range Variation in English Tonal Contrasts: Continuous or Categorical?
The importance of pitch range variation for intonational meaning and theory is well known; however, whether pitch range is a phonetic dimension which is treated categorically in English remains unclear. To test this possibility, three intonation continua varying in pitch range were constructed which had endpoints with contrastive representations under autosegmental-metrical (AM) theory: H* vs. ...
متن کاملIntonational contrasts encode speaker's certainty in neutral vs. incredulity declarative questions in French
While recent crosslinguistic studies have shown that the degree of speaker’s commitment or certainty is encoded intonationally either in a gradient or categorical fashion, our understanding of how French speakers use Intonational-Phrase (IP) final contours to signal their degree of certainty is limited. This paper investigates the contribution of a penultimate peak contour in French to convey s...
متن کاملTonal Template for Background Information: the Scaling of Pitch in Utterance-Medial Parentheticals in French
This paper shows that utterance-medial parentheticals elicited in controlled conditions in French have a typical tonal template, in which pitch is scaled down to some extent in non-intonational phrase-final syllables. Downscaling is implemented primarily as pitch register lowering, while pitch range compression seems speaker-dependent. Results also show remarkable inter-speaker consistency in l...
متن کاملCategorical vs. episodic memory for pitch accents in English
Phonological accounts of speech perception postulate that listeners map variable instances of speech to categorical features and remember only those categories. Other research maintains that listeners perceive and remember subcategorical phonetic detail. Our study probes memory to investigate the reality of categorical encoding for prosody—when listeners hear a pitch accent, what do they rememb...
متن کاملNative language affects rhythmic grouping of speech.
Perceptual attunement to one's native language results in language-specific processing of speech sounds. This includes stress cues, instantiated by differences in intensity, pitch, and duration. The present study investigates the effects of linguistic experience on the perception of these cues by studying the Iambic-Trochaic Law (ITL), which states that listeners group sounds trochaically (stro...
